Cairn Leuchan

The walk up Cairn Leuchan kicks off near Ballater and rewards you with proper Highland views without the leg-breaking effort some of the bigger peaks demand. It's a decent hillwalk rather than a scramble - nothing technical, just good honest footwork across moorland that shifts colour with the seasons.

On a clear day you're looking at the Cairngorms laid out like a map, and westward toward Braemar. The summit itself isn't dramatic - more of a high point where the land seems to roll away in all directions - but that's rather the appeal. You get the space and silence that draws people to the Highlands in the first place, without the crowds you'd find on Ben Avon or Lochnagar.

Walkers will find this hits the sweet spot. It takes roughly three hours return depending on pace and weather, so it's perfect if you're not doing a full day expedition. Families with older kids who've done a few hills will manage it fine; smaller children might struggle with the distance. The terrain's rough enough to need proper boots but won't have you cursing the choice.

If you're staying at Ballater Caravan Park - and it's a cracking base for the area - Cairn Leuchan sits nicely as a half-day or early-morning push. Ballater itself has everything you need for supplies before heading out. Spring through autumn are your best bets, though a dry winter day beats a soggy summer one any time.
