Cairn Hillock

The walk up Cairn Hillock from Ballater takes about an hour each way, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort. You're looking at roughly 2,000 feet of elevation gain through moorland and heather, with the path becoming rockier as you climb higher. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no dramatic peak or cairn that demands photographs - but the 360-degree views across Royal Deeside and into the Cairngorms proper more than compensate. On the right afternoon, with good light, you can see for miles across Aberdeenshire.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not technical, but it does require decent fitness and proper footwear. The terrain can be boggy lower down, especially after rain, so waterproof boots aren't optional. Families with older kids might manage it, though younger ones could find the moorland stretch a bit dull before the views kick in at the top.

There's nothing at the summit - no café, no facilities - so bring water and something to eat if you're planning to sit and soak it in. Most people allow three hours return, though that assumes a reasonable pace and a proper break at the top.

If you're staying at Ballater Caravan Park, this makes a cracking half-day adventure. The town itself has everything you need for supplies, and the walk starts practically on your doorstep. It's the sort of outing that reminds you why people bother with the Scottish Highlands in the first place.
