Caewent Roman Town

Caewent is what's left of Venta Silurum, a proper Roman town that once bustled with soldiers and traders around 100 AD. You're wandering around fields near Chepstow looking at earthwork ramparts and the odd bit of stonework - it's not a reconstructed site with fancy visitor centres, just the genuine article quietly mouldering into the Welsh landscape.

What you actually see depends on how much imagination you bring. The town walls are still visible as banks and ditches running through farmland, and if you know what to look for, you can make out where the streets crossed and where buildings once stood. There's a small museum in Chepstow with finds from excavations, which frankly helps enormously before or after your visit - otherwise you're squinting at earth banks wondering if they're genuinely Roman or just odd bits of topography.

Historically minded adults will find this genuinely interesting; it's one of Wales' most significant Roman sites. Children might get restless after half an hour unless they're proper archaeology enthusiasts. The walk around the perimeter takes about forty minutes on good paths.

It's free to access and open year-round since there's no gate to speak of. Spring or autumn are best - summer gets muggy, winter can be muddy. If you're staying at Penhein Glamping nearby, it's easily combined with Chepstow itself and the River Wye walks. Worth a couple of hours if Roman Britain interests you, but don't expect dramatic ruins.
