The walk up through Caerau Community Park catches you off guard - what looks like a modest reserve from the entrance unfolds into something genuinely worth a morning's exploration. It's a proper nature reserve just outside Port Talbot, the kind of place locals know but visitors often miss entirely.

You're walking through woodland mostly, with paths that wind up towards views across the valley. The reserve management has done decent work keeping it accessible - nothing too demanding, though there are sections with a bit of climb if you fancy pushing yourself. Bird spotters will find plenty to occupy them; depending on the season, you'll see various woodland species that make the binoculars worthwhile.

The real appeal here isn't a single standout feature but rather the feeling of proper escape. There's no admission charge, and you can potter about as long as you like. Give yourself at least an hour to do the main paths justice, though it won't exhaust you.
