Caddroun Rig

The walk up Caddroun Rig from Hexham way is a proper slog, but the views across the Tyne Valley once you're up there make it worthwhile. It's not a massive peak - you're talking around 380 metres - but the approach is steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned your lunch by the time you reach the top.

This is moorland hiking territory, the kind of place where the wind rarely stops and the sky takes up most of the view. On a clear day you can see right across to the Pennines. The landscape is raw and open, dotted with grouse moor and rough grass. Bring proper boots and a windproof - the weather changes fast up here.

Walkers and fell runners get the most from Caddroun Rig. It's not a destination for people wanting an easy stroll or a quick photo stop. Young kids might struggle with the distance and gradient unless they're already keen hikers. There's no visitor facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and a snack.

It sits well within a Northumberland walking holiday. If you're based at Kielder Campsite just down the road, you've got serious moorland and forest walking on your doorstep. Hexham itself makes a good base town - proper market town with pubs and cafes to recover in afterwards. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on your fitness and how long you linger at the top.
