About Byrestead Hill

The walk up Byrestead Hill from Kirkby Stephen is straightforward enough, though don't be fooled by how close it looks on the map. You're gaining proper height here - the fell rises 1,600 feet or so, and the last stretch is genuinely steep. Worth it though. From the top, the views across the Eden Valley are exceptional. On a clear day, you can see right across to the Lake District fells, which beats many of the more famous peaks you'd queue up for.

This is a serious walk for people who actually enjoy walking, not a casual stroll. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from town, depending on your fitness. The terrain is typical northern England moorland - boggy in places, rocky underfoot, and utterly exposed on the summit. Bring proper boots and waterproofs, because the weather changes faster up here than you'd expect.

Families with young children will find the climb tedious rather than rewarding. Serious walkers, on the other hand, will appreciate that Byrestead doesn't have the honeypot crowds of better-known peaks. It's the sort of place where you might spot red grouse and have genuine peace and quiet.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just two miles away, this makes a proper day walk. Alternatively, Wild Rose Holiday Park five miles south puts you in range for a half-day expedition. Neither requires booking in advance - just turn up and go.
