Buxted Methodist Church

A modest red-brick Methodist chapel sits quietly on the edge of Buxted, just outside Heathfield, the sort of place you'd walk past without thinking twice if you didn't know to look. Step inside though and there's a real sense of Victorian earnestness - the kind of no-frills worship space that tells you something about Sussex's industrial and agricultural past. It's small, intimate, and genuinely peaceful.

This is one for local history buffs rather than casual tourists. You won't find ornate stained glass or soaring arches here. What you get instead is authenticity - pews worn smooth by generations, simple fixtures, the kind of chapel where the community actually gathered. The building itself is the attraction, a window into 19th-century nonconformist life.

Admission appears to be free, though opening times aren't well-publicised, so ringing ahead is wise if you're planning a specific visit. Realistically, allow twenty minutes to half an hour. It's not somewhere you'd build a whole day around, but combined with a walk through the surrounding countryside or a stay at one of the nearby parks - Dernwood Farm Glamping is excellent - it makes for a worthwhile cultural detour. Horam Manor Country Park is another solid option nearby if you're after a longer camping holiday.

Families won't find much to hold children's attention, but walkers passing through the area should definitely poke their head in. It's the kind of small, genuine attraction that rewards curiosity.
