Butterwick Park

The RSPB reserve at Butterwick Park sprawls across fenland that honestly feels like the edge of England - flat, windswept, and alive with birds. You're looking at grazing marshes, reedbed, and open water where thousands of wildfowl come through on migration. Bring binoculars and expect to spend two to three hours here if you're serious about spotting.

It's a walker's place more than a stroller's place. The paths are firm enough but the landscape is completely open - no shade, no shelter. Winter and spring bring the best birdwatching, particularly for lapwings, redshanks, and the occasional marsh harrier sweeping low over the reeds. Summer can be quiet by comparison.

Boston is just down the road, which makes this a natural addition to a broader Lincolnshire tour rather than a destination on its own. If you're staying at Long Acres Touring Park nearby, it's well worth a morning visit. The reserve is free and you'll need sturdy boots after rain - the ground here doesn't drain quickly.
