Butterwell Covert

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Butterwell Covert is the sort of place you stumble upon when you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Gloucester and fancy stretching your legs. The forest itself is unremarkable in the best way - dense, quiet, the kind of spot where you actually hear birdsong instead of your own thoughts. Ancient oaks and a good mix of understorey mean there's proper woodland character, which younger kids often find more engaging than you'd expect, even if there's no play equipment or marked trails.

The walk is straightforward enough without being boring. It's free to access and works well as a two-hour detour if you're based at Apple Tree Park or Baldwin's Brook Glamping just down the road, both within three or four miles. The covert sits on decent ground so it's not waterlogged even after rain, which is a genuine plus - some woodland near Gloucester turns into a bog come winter.

Worth going out of your way for? Not particularly. But if you're holiday park-based in the area and want to break up caravan days without driving far, it does the job. The real value is proximity - you won't waste half a morning getting there and back like you would chasing the Symonds Yat views or Forest of Dean attractions. Bring the kids, let them kick through leaf litter, adults get some peace and quiet. That's the whole offer, and it's honest.
