Walking into the butterfly house hits you straight away - that warm, humid air and the sudden explosion of colour everywhere. Butterfly World & Farm Park, just outside Swindon, splits itself neatly into two halves: the tropical butterfly enclosure where thousands of these creatures drift past your face at head height, and the working farm section beyond. You're effectively paying for an afternoon watching delicate insects land on your shoulder while learning which ones come from which continent, then wandering about seeing pigs, goats, and whatever else they've got that day.

It's proper family territory. Kids under eight will be mesmerised by the butterflies for a solid hour, especially on a warm day when they're actually flying rather than sulking in corners. The farm bit extends that time a bit longer, though it's fairly standard farmyard fare - nothing you haven't seen at a dozen other rural attractions within twenty miles of Swindon. Bring a camera because the butterfly shots are genuinely striking.

The whole visit probably runs three to four hours if you're not rushing. Getting there from Park Farm Campsite, five miles south, takes about twelve minutes. It's the sort of mid-week thing that works well when the weather's decent but feels cramped in school holidays when every parent in the county's had the same idea. Check before you go - opening hours shift seasonally and admission prices aren't carved in stone.
