Butterfly Wood

Deep in the Quantock Hills near Holford, Butterfly Wood is a proper woodland walk rather than a formal attraction with gates and opening times. The name says it all - come in late spring or summer and you'll spot marbled whites, common blues, and peacocks drifting between the trees and clearings. It's a working woodland, so you're walking through genuine habitat rather than a manicured nature reserve, which makes it feel more alive somehow.

The woodland floor is thick with ferns and moss. There's something about being under that canopy, away from the main tourist trail around Holford, that makes it worth seeking out. Most visits take two to three hours depending on how slowly you move and how many times you stop to watch insects. It's free to wander - there's no visitor centre or car park, just woodland that's open to the public.

Families with older kids will enjoy the exploration side of it. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after an hour without a clear trail or destination to aim for. Serious butterfly enthusiasts and wildlife photographers will absolutely love it, especially if you time it for peak season. It pairs well with the Quantocks for walking - Moorhouse Campsite is just 1.7 miles away and a proper good base for exploring the whole area. Warren Bay Holiday Village is slightly further but offers more facilities if you want to combine woodland wandering with seaside time.

Wear decent boots. The ground gets boggy in places, and the paths aren't formally maintained.
