Butterfly Paradise

You step into a tropical greenhouse and immediately the temperature spikes - it's like someone's turned up the heat dial and forgotten to turn it back down. Butterfly Paradise is exactly what it says: a climate-controlled enclosure in Greater London where hundreds of butterflies from around the world fly freely overhead and land on your shoulders if you're patient enough.

It's properly mesmerizing, especially for kids between five and twelve. Younger children sometimes find the sheer chaos of fluttering wings overwhelming, while anyone older tends to just photograph everything without actually watching the insects. The best bit? There's no barrier between you and them. Stand still long enough and you'll get monarchs, swallowtails, and species you won't recognize landing on you. The staff can be hit or miss with information - sometimes helpful, sometimes clearly bored.

Allow about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're into macro photography or your kids are determined to touch every single specimen. It's not free, and prices shift seasonally, so check ahead. The humidity is intense, so go early in the day before you've been sweating in the greenhouse for three hours.

If you're based at Lovat Parks nearby, this works as a decent half-day excursion when you fancy something indoors - useful if London's weather decides to be properly grim, which it often does. It's no substitute for actually getting outside though.
