The 18th-century mansion sits in 300 acres of proper Yorkshire parkland just outside Hull, and it's genuinely worth the drive from wherever you're staying in the area. Walking up the tree-lined avenue, the hall appears suddenly - all elegant Georgian proportions and that slightly faded grandeur that makes old estates feel lived-in rather than museum-y.

Inside, you get the full country house experience: rooms crammed with furniture, paintings, and the kind of clutter that tells you actual humans occupied these spaces. Upstairs, the bedrooms are particularly good - Victorian beds, period dressing tables, wardrobes full of clothes. History types will spend hours reading the labels; families with younger kids might want to time it for a quieter morning before restlessness sets in.

The real draw, though, is the parkland itself. If you're staying at Burton Constable Holiday Park next door - literally eight-tenths of a mile away - you can walk straight in and spend an afternoon following the lake, spotting the follies and follies-in-progress tucked into the landscape. The estate's also got working gardens and a proper woodland walk that beats paying for entertainment back at the caravan.

Check opening times before you go; country houses like this can be temperamental about weekday closures. Admission usually costs a handful of quid. You'll need three to four hours if you're doing both house and grounds properly, longer if you're the sort who reads everything.
