Burn Valley Family Wood

The woodland paths at Burn Valley wind through proper green space just inland from Hartlepool - the kind of place where you can actually lose the sound of traffic if you walk far enough in. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured country estate, so expect genuine forest floor with tree roots catching your boots and actual wildlife rather than sculptured gardens.

The reserve itself is manageable for families with kids who can handle uneven terrain. You're looking at an hour or so to do a decent loop without rushing, longer if you stop to spot birds or just sit on the banks.
