Burleighcroft Wood

The woodland around Burleighcroft sits on the edge of Hitchin's commuter belt, a proper escape when you've had enough of town life. It's the kind of place where the trees do the talking - mixed deciduous woodland with enough variation to keep things interesting across the seasons. Spring brings bluebells that carpet the forest floor, while autumn turns the whole thing into shades of rust and gold.

Walkers will find their time here well spent. The paths wind through fairly open woodland, nothing too technical, though you'll want proper boots after rain as it can get boggy in patches. Most people spend an hour to ninety minutes here, wandering the main routes. It's not enormous, so don't expect to lose yourself for a full day, but that's rather the point - in and out, fresh air, done.

Historically it's modest stuff - this is working woodland rather than some grand estate, though the layered management of trees across different ages gives it character. Families with younger kids might find it a bit basic after half an hour unless they're the sort who'll spend all day turning sticks into wands. Older walkers and photographers do better here.
