Bur Wood

Walk into Bur Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where sunlight filters through in columns and the floor is thick with leaf litter. It's a genuine woodland experience just outside Henley-on-Thames, nothing manicured or themed about it.

The woodland itself is relatively compact, so you're looking at a pleasant hour or two rather than a full day's expedition. There are paths through it, though they're not always obvious - which is part of the charm, frankly. Families with primary-age kids will enjoy the scrambling about and den-building potential, though teenagers might find it a bit tame. What you really get here is that forest-bathing feeling: birdsong, the smell of damp earth, the occasional deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a half-morning detour if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Swiss Farm Touring and Camping or Henley Four Oaks are both within five miles. Pair it with a proper walk along the Thames, or combine it with exploring Henley's town centre and the river attractions. The wood itself is free to access, though parking can be tight depending on where you approach from.

Go early if possible, especially at weekends. Late afternoon light through the trees is lovely, but the paths get muddy quickly after rain. Worth the visit if you want a genuine woodland wander without the tourist circus.
