Bull Rough

Bull Rough is a proper forest tucked into the Shropshire landscape just outside Shrewsbury, and it's the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk more than it rewards the Instagram crowd. The woodland is genuinely dense - ancient oaks and conifers packed tight enough that you lose the sound of the world beyond the treeline within minutes of entry.

What you get here depends entirely on your pace. Walkers will find decent trails threading through the heart of it, with the ground soft underfoot and plenty of spots to stop and actually listen. There's something about a working forest that feels less managed than your typical country park, which appeals if you're the type who prefers their nature unvarnished. Families with younger kids might find an hour satisfying before the lack of facilities or obvious focal points wears thin - there's no visitor centre, no playground, no benches really. This isn't that sort of forest.

The light filters through the canopy in that particular way that makes photographers fidget with their settings, and come autumn the colours are proper lovely. Winter walks are excellent too when the skeleton of the trees reveals the full depth of the wood.

Combine it with either Mill Farm or Lower Hill Campsite nearby and you've got a solid half-day activity that won't cost you a penny or require any planning beyond sensible footwear. It's free and accessible, though opening hours aren't publicised - treat it as a walk-at-will sort of place. Worth the detour if you're based in Shropshire for a week. Not worth driving 90 minutes for.
