Bull Park Plantation

You'll find Bull Park Plantation tucked into the folds of North Yorkshire countryside between Leyburn and the wider Dales - it's a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction, which means you get the real thing. The woodland here is dense and atmospheric, with trails that wind through mature trees and sections of younger plantation where light filters through in strips. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels increasingly rare.

Walkers will get the most from Bull Park. The terrain is manageable without being dull - there's enough slope to keep your legs engaged, but nothing that'll leave you cursing the postcode. If you're staying at Yorkshire Dales Holiday Park up the road near Leyburn, this makes a solid half-day outing without needing to drive far. Bring proper footwear though; the forest floor stays boggy well into summer, and tree roots catch you out if you're not paying attention.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no playground - just woodland. That's either exactly what you want or not what you want at all. It works brilliantly as a breather between Dales walking and village exploring, somewhere to reset before heading into Leyburn proper. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice without rushing. The plantation isn't dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but it's genuine and genuinely peaceful.
