Bugmore Hill

The walk up Bugmore Hill rewards you with proper views across Hampshire's rolling countryside, and on a clear day you can spot the South Downs in the distance. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District - but it's a solid 30-minute climb from Alresford that feels worthwhile once you're at the top. The landscape opens up nicely, with fields dropping away on all sides and enough space to sit and have a packed lunch without feeling crowded.

Walkers will find this most satisfying, particularly families with older kids who don't mind a bit of gradient. Younger children might lose interest halfway up unless you're good at spotting sheep and making it into a game. The route itself is straightforward enough, though boots are worth wearing after rain - it gets boggy in places.

Alresford itself is your base here, a proper Georgian market town with decent pubs and a small high street. If you're staying nearby at The Spinney Caravan Park or Hampshire Hills - both within striking distance - Bugmore Hill makes an excellent morning out before heading back for lunch. Woodlands Camping is a bit further, but still reasonable for a day trip.

There's no formal visitor centre or facilities at the summit, so come prepared with water and something to eat. Best tackled in the cooler months when the path dries out. Allow a couple of hours round trip if you're taking it slowly.
