Buck's Wood

A proper woodland walk just east of Bury Saint Edmunds, Buck's Wood is the sort of place you slip into without fanfare and emerge from feeling like you've actually been somewhere. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days there's a cool, dappled quality to the light. You'll find well-trodden paths threading through beech and oak, though nothing too manicured - it feels genuinely wild in places.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's ideal for a couple of hours of proper forest tramping without the crowds you'd find at more famous Suffolk reserves. The paths loop through at various lengths, so you can do a quick thirty-minute circuit or disappear for the better part of an afternoon if you're keen. Birdwatchers occasionally spot woodpeckers and nuthatches; autumn brings brilliant colour, though spring's the best time for bluebells and birdsong.

It's free to access and there's no formal entry fee or opening hours nonsense - you simply turn up. Bring waterproof boots though, especially in winter. The ground gets genuinely boggy in places. If you're staying at Apple Mount Retreat nearby, this makes a cracking addition to a quiet Suffolk break. It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but it's exactly what a woodland should be - undisturbed, genuine, and worth the short drive from town.
