Buckie South and West Church of Scotland

The Church of Scotland in Buckie's south and west quarter is one of those buildings you'll walk past a dozen times before actually stepping inside - which would be a shame. It's a proper Victorian-era church with all the solidity you'd expect from Scottish ecclesiastical architecture, sitting quietly in a town that's best known for its fishing heritage.

Inside, there's genuine character. The craftsmanship in the woodwork and the sense of space under the roof make it worth a detour if you're already in town. You'll get a real feel for how communities gathered here, generations of fishermen's families marking life's big moments within these walls. It's the sort of place that tells you something about working-class life in the Highlands without needing plaques everywhere.

The main draw here isn't spectacle - there's no soaring rose window or castle-like exterior. What you're getting is authenticity and a bit of quiet contemplation in a location that's genuinely lived-in rather than over-curated for tourists. Probably fifteen to twenty minutes if you're having a proper look around.

If you're camping at Greencraig Pods just up the road, it's an easy walk into Buckie town centre to find the church. Couples and solo travellers hunting for the real Scotland rather than the postcard version will appreciate it more than families with restless kids, to be honest. Free to visit, though leaving a donation when you can is the decent thing to do.
