Telecommunications might not sound like obvious holiday material, but walk into BT Connected Earth near Arundel and you'll find yourself grinning like you've stumbled onto something genuinely clever. The museum traces how we've gone from tapping morse code to video calls - and they've actually made it visual rather than dry as dust.

You'll see vintage telephone exchanges, early mobile phones (some the size of bricks), and interactive displays that let you have a proper fiddle with old tech. There's something oddly satisfying about understanding how a phonebox worked or watching demonstrations of undersea cables. Kids usually perk up when they realise their grandparents had to queue at a payphone - the horror of it all.

The whole thing takes between 90 minutes and two hours depending on how deeply you're into the subject. It's indoor, so brilliant on a rainy afternoon when you've exhausted the beaches at nearby Littlehampton. History buffs will appreciate the wartime communications section, while anyone curious about how technology actually works won't feel patronised by the explanations.

Based near Arundel, it works well as a break-day activity if you're staying at Brookside Caravan Park or the Littlehampton site. Don't expect a full day out here - it's a solid few hours, then you'll want to move on to somewhere else. Worth the detour though, especially if you've got teenagers who think the internet simply appeared one day.
