Bryn Pennal

The walk up Bryn Pennal isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the views. From Machynlleth, it's a proper little hill that locals seem to know about far better than visitors do. The summit gives you sight lines across the Dyfi Valley - on a clear day you're looking at layers of hills rolling toward Snowdonia, which is worth the sweat alone.

Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - it's just you, the hill, and whatever weather Mid Wales decides to throw at you.
