Bryn Moel

The climb up Bryn Moel isn't dramatic in the way Welsh peaks often are, but that's rather the point. This modest summit near Aberystwyth rewards you with proper views across Cardigan Bay without requiring you to be a fell runner. The walk from the base takes the best part of an hour, and it's a steady plod rather than scrambling terrain - good for families with older kids or anyone after gentle exercise with a payoff.

You'll see over Aberystwyth itself when conditions allow, and on clearer days the view extends across the bay. The terrain is mostly moorland and rough grass, which means it can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters. There's a path, though it's not always obvious, so a bit of map reading or a GPS app helps avoid meandering.

This isn't the kind of peak that justifies a whole day trip on its own, but it's excellent if you're staying at Forester's Retreat Glamping - only six miles away - and want to fit a decent walk around your park holiday. Combine it with a wander around Aberystwyth town itself, or head up the coast towards the cliffs at Clarach. Best done on a clearer day; mist rolls in fast here and the views are what you're after. Free to access, and no facilities at the top, so bring water.
