Brownber Head

The walk up Brownber Head takes you past proper fell country, where you'll scramble over rough ground and loose stone until the view suddenly opens up. It's a modest peak by Pennine standards - nothing to intimidate experienced walkers, but enough of a pull to feel like you've earned the summit.

From the top you get views across the Eden Valley towards the Lake District fells if the weather plays ball. The rocky outcrop at the summit makes a decent windbreak and a good place to sit with a flask. It's the sort of hill that rewards a clear morning more than most - cloud rolls in fast up here and the landmark becomes just another lump of moorland.

Allow a couple of hours from Kirkby Stephen for the round trip, depending on your pace and how long you linger. It's a walker's hill rather than a stroll - bring proper boots and check the forecast because exposure to wind is real at this height. Summer or early autumn works best; winter requires proper planning.
