Broomfield Park

The walk into Broomfield Park proper takes you past grazing fields and over a small bridge where the reserve opens up into something altogether quieter than you'd expect given how close London is. This is genuinely wild Hertfordshire - wet meadows, woodland edges, and enough birdlife to keep enthusiasts occupied for hours. We saw a hobby circling overhead on our visit, which felt like a proper bonus.

It's the sort of place that rewards patience rather than rushing through. Families with older kids will manage the terrain fine, though parents of toddlers might find the footpaths a bit boggy after rain. Bring binoculars if you're serious about the birds. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to do a decent circuit and actually look at things rather than just marching through.

The reserve works brilliantly as part of a wider Lee Valley exploration. You're five miles or so from Theobalds Park campsite, which gets decent ratings and makes a sensible base for the area. From there you can hit up various bits of the valley without feeling like you're chasing your tail. Broomfield itself is free to access - proper British nature reserve, no nonsense.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are cracking for migrants, but honestly the place has enough going on year-round. Just don't expect grandstand views or easy parking. This is intentionally low-key, which is rather the point.
