A proper nature reserve just outside Milton Keynes, Brooklands Meadows is one of those places that rewards you for wandering off the main drag. The meadows themselves are genuinely lovely - open grassland dotted with wildflowers depending on the season, backed by woodland that offers decent shelter when the Buckinghamshire weather turns. You're walking through actual wildlife habitat here, not a manicured park.

What you get depends entirely on what you're into. Serious birdwatchers will spend half a day picking through the reeds and wooded edges. Casual walkers can knock out a couple of miles without breaking a sweat, and it's the sort of place where you'll actually see things - voles, damselflies, songbirds - rather than just scenery. Kids won't get bored if they're the type to actually look at stuff, but it's not a playground.

The paths are well-maintained, though muddy stretches are inevitable after rain. There's something refreshingly un-manicured about it - this is conservation first, visitor comfort second. That's partly why it works.

If you're staying at Ekeney House Campsite nearby, this fits perfectly into a morning walk before heading elsewhere. The reserve connects reasonably well to other green spaces around Milton Keynes, so you can string together a decent day without retracing your steps. Go midweek if possible - weekends get busier, and a nature reserve's whole point rather evaporates when you're queuing behind a buggy.
