Bronsdons Copse

Ancient woodland doesn't get much better than this. Bronsdons Copse near Pewsey is proper old-growth forest - the sort of place where you actually feel the weight of centuries underfoot, not just told about it. The trees are gnarled and substantial, which means the canopy blocks out most of the grey sky even in winter, and come spring the floor is carpeted with bluebells and wood anemones that catch you off guard with how vivid they are.

It's a walker's spot first and foremost. There's no visitor centre, no café, no real infrastructure - just paths that wind through the woodland at a gentle pace. Bring proper footwear because the ground gets boggy in places, especially after rain. You can easily spend two hours here without feeling rushed, though even thirty minutes of wandering feels restorative. Children will enjoy it if they're the type who like spotting things - newts in the damper areas, the occasional deer, different mosses and fungi depending on the season.

The nearest proper base is Totteridge Farm Camping Pods and Camping, which sits just 5.6 miles away and is excellently rated. Use that as your headquarters if you're spending a few days in Wiltshire exploring the chalk downland and burial mounds. Bronsdons Copse works as a morning ramble before heading to somewhere like Marlborough or Devizes for lunch.
