Broadsands

The beach at Broadsands curves gently between two rocky outcrops, and it's proper golden sand - the kind that doesn't vanish under your feet after three steps. You get decent waves here, which explains why you'll often see a few surfers bobbing about, but it's equally fine for families who just want to splash about without fighting a current.

Walking down from Ilfracombe, the approach is straightforward enough, though the final stretch involves some stone steps that can get a bit slippery when wet. The beach itself stays fairly sheltered, and at low tide the exposed rocks create natural pools that kids find endlessly entertaining - proper treasure hunting territory if you know what to look for.

What makes Broadsands worth the trip is its relative quietness compared to the busier stretches along this coast. Yes, it fills up in summer, but you're unlikely to find yourself fighting for space. The rock formations at each end offer decent exploration if the tide's out, and the views back towards Ilfracombe aren't bad at all.

Stay nearby at Watermouth Valley Camping Park or Sandaway Beach Holiday Park - both within walking distance - and you can pop down for an evening stroll without the drive. The beach works best at mid to high tide if you're keen on swimming; at low tide it becomes more about rock pools and shell hunting. Bring proper shoes if you're doing the walk from town - trainers get grubby fast. No facilities directly on the beach, so stock up in Ilfracombe before you head down.
