Broadmoor Hill

Getting up Broadmoor Hill from Cockermouth isn't exactly a gruelling trek, but it rewards the effort with decent views across the Eden Valley and back towards the Lake District fells. The walk itself is straightforward enough - mostly field paths and woodland sections that take the best part of an hour depending on your pace. On a clear day you can see Skiddaw and the main peaks beyond, though I'll be honest, if weather's closing in you're looking at moorland views and not much else.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with decent boots and a bit of stamina, or anyone after a proper Cumbrian hill without needing a full day's commitment. Solo walkers enjoy it too - quiet without feeling remote. The terrain's a touch muddy after rain, so plan accordingly. Allow two hours there and back if you're taking it leisurely, stopping to spot red kites or just breathing properly at the top.

If you're based at Whinfell Hall Farm Campsite just down the road, this is a natural choice - close enough for a half-day outing without fagging about in the car. Greysouthen and Castle Guards Farm work equally well as springboards. Cockermouth itself provides tea and provisions, though the town's better known for its literary connections than its proximity to this particular summit.

Worthy of the walk? Absolutely. It's not Catbells or Skiddaw, but for somewhere genuinely quick and uncrowded, Broadmoor Hill does the job properly.
