Walking into Broadley Wood feels like stepping back in time - towering pines and dense undergrowth create the kind of proper forest atmosphere that's become rarer in the Highlands. The woodland spreads across a decent chunk of land near Buckie, offering a genuine escape from the caravan parks that pepper the area.

It's not a manicured visitor attraction with visitor centres or guided trails - this is the real thing. You pick your own route through the trees, which means the experience depends entirely on how much effort you want to put in. Families with young children might find the density a bit intimidating; the paths aren't exactly marked, and it's easy to lose your bearings. But walkers who enjoy a bit of exploration without the crowds will find it rewarding. The woodland has a wild, undisturbed quality that most managed forests have lost.

Allow at least an hour, though serious hikers could spend half a day in here. Spring and early summer are best when the understory isn't completely impenetrable. Winter's manageable too - just watch for muddy patches.
