Brinkley Wood

The woodland around Brinkley Wood, just east of Newmarket, is proper walking territory. Ancient trees, decent paths, and that particular quiet you only get in Cambridgeshire forests - it's the sort of place where you can hear yourself think again. The wood itself isn't large enough to swallow a full day, but it's brilliant for a couple of hours if you're staying nearby. Families with young children do well here; the paths are manageable, and there's enough shade to keep things comfortable even on warmer days. The area has that peaceful, understated charm you find across East Anglian woodlands - no dramatic views, but genuinely pleasant surroundings. Worth combining with time at Piggles Retreat or HappenOak Treehouse, both within spitting distance. If you're staying at either park and fancy a woodland walk rather than another play area session, this fits the bill nicely. The nearest town of Newmarket gives you a proper base for supplies and meals, which helps. Go midweek if you can - weekends tend to draw local dog walkers and families, and the wood's narrow enough that you'll notice the traffic. Realistically, allow an hour to ninety minutes unless you're really keen on spotting wildlife or sketching trees. Free access as far as I can tell, and the parking situation is straightforward enough. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely worth the detour when you're in the area.
