Brimstone Wood

Brimstone Wood sits just outside Hitchin, a proper working forest that doesn't announce itself with fanfare or visitor centres. You're walking through actual woodland management in action here - coppiced hazel, managed broadleaf, the sort of place where you'll spot forestry work rather than gift shops.

It's the kind of forest that rewards a slow meander. The paths aren't manicured, which means they're muddy after rain but genuinely peaceful. Walkers will find genuine miles of quiet woodland, while families with younger kids might manage an hour or so before the novelty of "more trees" wears thin. There's nothing specifically built for entertainment - no adventure playgrounds or interpretation boards - so you're getting pure forest experience.

The real appeal is how accessible it is without feeling manufactured. Early morning visits are superb for spotting wildlife. Autumn's particularly lovely when the light filters through properly. Summer can feel a bit oppressive with the canopy so thick.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a proper walk, thirty minutes if you just want to stretch your legs. Free admission as far as we can tell, with no formal car park to speak of, so arrive early. If you're staying at Almshoe Glamping nearby, this makes a solid half-day escape - close enough for a morning hike without eating into your time elsewhere. Bring proper boots though. The ground's unforgiving when it's wet.
