Brimham Rocks

These towering rock formations rise out of the moorland like something from a different planet. Brimham Rocks is a sprawling site of weathered millstone grit boulders scattered across open heathland near Harrogate, and it's the kind of place that demands exploration on foot. You'll spend a good two to three hours picking your way between the rocks, squeezing through narrow gaps, and scrambling up to the flatter tops for views across Nidderdale.

It's essentially free and unmanaged, which is both brilliant and a bit chaotic. There are informal paths but no signs telling you where to go, so part of the appeal is just wandering and discovering your own route. Kids absolutely love it - the climbing, the caves, the sense of adventure - though younger ones might need help on the steeper bits. Dog walkers swear by it. History buffs will appreciate the Bronze Age history here, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation, so you'll want to read up beforehand.

The weather matters. On a grey day it's moody and atmospheric; in sunshine it's properly spectacular. Bring decent boots though - the ground is rough and there's no proper facilities on site. Harrogate is the nearest town if you need supplies, and the location works well with a broader Nidderdale trip. It's about twenty minutes from Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park and Windmill Retreats, making it a solid morning or afternoon activity when you're based in the area.
