Bright Golf Course sits just outside Downpatrick, a proper 18-hole layout that punches above its weight for a small-town course. The terrain rolls nicely - nothing too dramatic, but enough variation to keep you interested without feeling punishing. Fairways are well-maintained and the greens hold reasonably true, though the rough can be unforgiving if you stray.

This is straightforward, unpretentious golf. You won't find championship theatre here, but you will find decent value and a course that locals clearly respect. The setting is rural enough to feel away from things, yet it's only a short drive from Downpatrick town centre, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Edgewater or Coneyisland are within easy reach.

Golfers of all abilities will get something from it. Handicap players can test themselves without the stress of an overly difficult course, while higher handicappers won't feel completely out of their depth. Figure on four hours for a full round, maybe a touch less if the course isn't busy.

Timing-wise, weekdays tend to be quieter than weekends, though you'd want to ring ahead about starting times and green fees - I couldn't pin down current rates. If you're planning a few days around Downpatrick with the family, and you're a golfer, it's worth booking in. The surrounding area has proper walking country towards the Mourne Mountains, so you can easily build it into a longer trip.
