Bridgnorth Northgate Museum

The museum sits right in Bridgnorth's town centre, housed in what was once the grand gatehouse of the medieval town walls. You're looking at several floors of local history - Roman finds, Tudor artefacts, and plenty of material about Bridgnorth's role during the English Civil War. The Northgate itself is the real draw. Climb the stairs and you get proper views across the Severn Valley, which alone makes the visit worthwhile on a clear day.

It's the sort of place where history buffs will spend a solid hour or two, while kids might manage 45 minutes before restlessness sets in. The museum staff are generally knowledgeable if you ask questions, which helps bring the displays to life rather than just reading the labels. Free entry is a massive plus.

From Stanmore Hall or Hay & Hedgerow - both excellent bases if you're touring the area - you're only a short drive away. Park up in town and tackle the High Street as well while you're there. Bridgnorth itself has enough quirky independent shops and decent pubs to make a half-day of it, especially if the weather's decent and you fancy wandering down to the riverside. Not a blockbuster attraction, but genuinely worthwhile if you're already in Shropshire, and it costs nothing.
