Bridge Eyot

An island woodland tucked into a bend of the Thames between Maidenhead and Windsor, Bridge Eyot is one of those places locals know and visitors miss. The walk in from the Maidenhead side takes you through proper riverside scenery - willows drooping over the water, the occasional rowing boat sliding past - before you step onto the island itself.

Once you're over, it's a small woodland with enough paths to poke around for 30 minutes without feeling rushed. Nothing dramatic happens here. No viewpoints, no ancient monuments, no facilities. Just trees, the hum of the Thames, and the kind of quiet you don't often get this close to towns. The undergrowth is thick in places, the paths are a bit muddy after rain, and it feels genuinely removed from the world despite being sandwiched between two famous bits of England.

Best for people who like walking without purpose - those who'd rather wander than tick off sights. Kids might find it a bit dull after the novelty of being on an island wears off. Couples or solo walkers will appreciate the seclusion. It's free, naturally, and there's no time pressure. Pop over if you're staying at one of the bell tent parks nearby - Rent Bell Tents or Hurleyford Farm are both within easy striking distance - and you've got a proper little adventure on your doorstep. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip, but it's the kind of unpretentious place that reminds you why people move to the Thames Valley in the first place.
