Brettenham Park

Walk into Brettenham Park and you're straight into proper Suffolk countryside - 127 acres of woodland and meadow where the birdsong actually drowns out whatever you were thinking about. It's a nature reserve run with care, the kind of place where you spot nuthatches in the canopy and, if you're lucky, spotted woodpeckers hammering away at the oaks.

The main appeal here is straightforward: woodland walks that don't demand much effort but deliver quietly. Timing matters. Spring and early summer are lush and alive. Winter's fine if you want to see the bones of the woodland and migrating wildfowl. Avoid midday in summer when the insects are out in force and the shade's at a premium.
