Breaking The Mould

A contemporary art space in Chesterfield that takes itself seriously without the stuffiness you might expect. Breaking The Mould is run by artists for artists, which means the work on display actually has something to say rather than just filling white walls.

The gallery focuses on ceramics and sculpture, though the programme shifts regularly enough that repeat visits feel worthwhile. On my last visit, the pieces ranged from traditional hand-thrown work to genuinely experimental stuff that made you think twice. Some of it won't be to everyone's taste - that's rather the point.

It's free to get in, which removes any barrier to just popping round on a whim. You can spend twenty minutes having a quick look or a couple of hours if something's really grabbed you. The space itself is unpretentious, which suits the work.

For a family holiday at one of the nearby parks - Poolsbrook Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is just over 2.5 miles away - this makes a decent wet-weather alternative or a cultural interlude. Teenagers interested in art and design will probably appreciate it more than younger kids. Adults who've never quite understood contemporary art might surprise themselves here.
