Brawith Wood

The woodland floor at Brawith is thick with moss and leaf litter - the sort of place where you actually hear your footsteps. It's a proper walk through dense North Yorkshire forest, nowhere near as manicured as some nature reserves, and that's exactly what makes it worth your time.

The trees here are tall and close-packed, which means even on a bright day you're walking through a green-filtered light that feels almost underwater. There are paths threading through, though they're not signposted to death, so you need to keep your wits about you. Ideal for walkers who want something real rather than a visitor centre experience, and families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground without whinging.

It's just outside Thirsk, which makes it a decent half-day addition to a holiday in the area. If you're staying at Woodland Lakes Lodges nearby, you could easily slip over here for a morning wander before heading elsewhere. Allow a good hour minimum if you actually want to explore rather than just potter for twenty minutes.

There's no facilities as far as I can tell - no café, no loos, nothing - so come prepared. It's free to walk, and that's refreshing. Not a destination on its own, but genuinely good woodland, the kind where you'll see birds if you're quiet about it. Better than the surrounding countryside deserves, frankly.
