Braniel Hill

The walk up Braniel Hill takes maybe twenty minutes if you're not rushing, and the payoff is a proper 360-degree view across Belfast and out towards the lough. It's nothing dramatic - you're only looking at about 200 metres elevation - but on a clear day you can pick out the shipyard cranes, the city sprawl, and the Divis and Black Mountain ridge to the west. The hill sits just on the edge of Lisburn and Castlereagh, close enough to Belfast that it feels like a real escape but far enough that you actually feel like you've gone somewhere.

This is one for walkers who want something quick and uncomplicated, or families with kids who need a proper outing without committing to hours. The paths are straightforward, the ground doesn't get too boggy, and there's enough space to let people spread out. History types might find the views interesting more for the geography lesson than anything else - seeing how the city developed from your vantage point tells you something about the layout.

Stay at The Pods at Streamvale just down the road - it's only 1.6 miles away - and you've got a solid base for exploring both the hills and the city itself. Dundonald Touring Caravan Park is another sensible option if you're after something more conventional. Either way, Braniel Hill works as a late-afternoon walk before dinner, or an early morning jaunt if you want to catch the light catching the water. It won't take your breath away, but it does the job properly.
