About Bradfield Wood

Ancient woodland doesn't get much more authentic than Bradfield Wood. This is proper old-growth forest - the sort of place where you half expect to stumble upon a woodcutter's cottage or a fox's den. Located just outside Malmesbury, it's one of those remnant forests that's been continuously wooded for centuries, which means the ecosystem here is genuinely different from newer plantations.

Walking through it feels different too. The canopy is thick, the undergrowth dense, and there's a real sense of stepping back in time. Spring brings bluebells and wood anemones that carpet the floor in white and purple. Summer's heavy with green and the sound of birdsong. Autumn turns it golden and copper. Winter reveals the skeletal structure of the place - you can see properly into the woodland then, and spot the old trees that form the spine of the whole thing.

This isn't an attraction with facilities or a visitor centre - it's a working wood, sometimes managed by conservation volunteers. No entry fee, no fancy parking. Just woodland as it should be. Allow two to three hours for a proper wander, though you can dip in for an hour if time's tight. Families with older kids who can manage rougher paths will get the most from it. Younger ones might find it a bit samey after a while.

If you're staying at Burton Hill Caravan Park or Malmesbury Glamping, this is an excellent morning walk before heading into town. Real forest, no frills.
