Brackenbury Ditches Hillfort

You won't find crowds or visitor facilities at Brackenbury Ditches - just earthen ramparts rising from the Cotswold slopes near Dursley, marking where an Iron Age community once dug in. The site consists of two concentric ditches and banks forming a hillfort, now softened by centuries of grass and sheep grazing. Walking the perimeter takes about 20 minutes if you're not stopping to imagine the fort's working life, or longer if you want to sit on the ridge and actually absorb the place.

It's genuinely worth visiting if you're into archaeology or just fancy a proper walk with purpose. The views across the Severn Valley are solid - not dramatic, but you get a sense of why someone would choose this hilltop. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract; there's no museum, no interpretation boards explaining what you're looking at, just the landscape itself. The site is open access and free, though the nearest facilities are in Dursley itself, a short drive away. Spring or autumn works best - summer can feel overgrown, winter muddy. If you're based at Pepper Pot Caravan Park or any of the other sites in the area, it's a proper local option that takes an hour or so out of your day without demanding much. Pair it with a walk through the wider countryside rather than treating it as a standalone stop.
