Box Wood Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself wandering through deciduous woodland that feels properly removed from the Stroud hubbub, even though it's barely on the town's doorstep. Box Wood is a working nature reserve where the trees do the talking - oak, beech, and ash creating that cathedral-like quiet you get when the canopy closes overhead. The paths are straightforward enough, though muddy in winter, and the main appeal is simply being among the trees rather than spotting rare birds or bagging a list of wildflowers.

It's the sort of place that suits a couple of hours maximum. Walkers will appreciate the peaceful network of trails, though there's nothing dramatic - no viewpoints, no dramatic descents. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after a while; there's no play area or interpretive boards to break things up. If you're after something more structured, Symonds Yat or the Forest of Dean are bigger propositions.

The real draw is proximity. You're staying at Tobacconist Farm Campsite just up the road, or perhaps Middle Lypiatt Glamping if you've splashed out, and you want a decent walk without piling everyone back in the car. Free entry, naturally. Spring and early summer work best when there's actual life in the undergrowth. Autumn's pleasant too if you don't mind the damp. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring more of Stroud's weekend warriors trying to reconnect with nature.
