Box Mill Scenic Walk

The walk along Box Mill follows a stretch of the River Blackwater as it cuts through Essex countryside east of Halstead, and it's proper lovely if you're after an hour's ramble without too much fuss. The path takes you past the old mill workings - you'll spot the weathered buildings and the weir where the water still churns away, giving you a real sense of what kept this place ticking a century ago.

It's essentially a nature reserve now, so expect riverside trees, the odd kingfisher if you're lucky, and banks thick with wildflowers in spring. The walk works best for families with older kids and keen walkers - younger children might find the muddy patches annoying, especially after rain. The route isn't strenuous, but it does get a bit squelchy underfoot in places.

There's no entry charge as far as I can tell, and you'll want a good couple of hours if you're stopping to look at things properly. Go early morning for bird watching, or late afternoon when the light hits the water nicely.

If you're staying at Woodchests Glamping or Gosfield Lake Resort nearby, this makes a solid half-day outing to break up a park-based holiday. It's close enough that you won't spend hours driving, but far enough into the countryside to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. Don't expect dramatic views - it's subtle Essex at its best.
