Bowling Park

The River Aire cuts through Bowling Park like someone's drawn a line with a ruler, and once you're down there among the willows and alders, Shipley feels miles away instead of just a short walk. This is proper Yorkshire riverside - nothing manicured about it, just open grassland, tree cover where you need it, and water that moves. The park sits right on the outskirts of town, which means you can park up and be into nature within minutes.

Walkers get the most from this place. There's enough ground to cover to make an outing worthwhile, and the riverside path keeps things interesting without demanding map-reading skills. Families with younger kids will find it pleasant for an hour or so - the open spaces let them burn off energy, and the water's always good for a bit of excitement. Birdwatchers come here too, though you'll want to be patient and quiet about it.

It's the kind of spot that works perfectly if you're based at Two Acre Camping or Esholt Holiday Caravan Park nearby. Neither of those are far enough away to make planning difficult, and after a couple of hours here you've ticked off a genuine walk without needing to drive to the Lake District. The reserve won't take your whole day, but that's actually the point - it's a solid half-day activity that fits naturally into a broader holiday in West Yorkshire. Best visited when the light's good and the water level's not too high - winter can turn it boggy in patches.
