Bower Wood

The woodland around Bower stretches deeper than you'd expect for somewhere so close to Carlisle. Ancient oak and beech stand alongside younger conifers, creating that mix of old and new forest that characterises much of Cumbria's working woodlands.

It's proper walking country rather than a manicured park. Paths wind through the trees without fancy signage, which means you'll need decent boots and a bit of map sense - or just let yourself get pleasantly lost for an hour. The canopy's thick enough to feel secluded, even when you're barely five miles from the city. Birdwatchers come here regularly. Families with younger kids might find the lack of infrastructure a bit limiting, but anyone aged eight-plus who enjoys actual woodland rather than a countryside theme park will get hours out of it.

There's no entrance fee that we could find, and no formal opening hours either - it functions as accessible woodland rather than a gated attraction. Best visited in autumn when the colour's worth the muddy walk, or spring when the light filters through fresh leaves.

If you're based at Low Moor Head or High Gaitle caravan parks nearby, this beats sitting in the caravan on a soft day. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people move to the Lake District in the first place - proper woods, no queue, no gift shop. Just trees and the occasional deer if you're lucky.
