Bow Lough

The water at Bow Lough sits flat and grey on most days, reflecting whatever sky decides to show up. It's a proper working lake just outside Hillsborough, the kind of place locals bring their fishing rods without making a fuss about it. You won't find much in the way of facilities or formal paths - this is genuine countryside water, not a visitor attraction dressed up with signage and gift shops.

What you get is a straightforward walk around the shoreline, best tackled after dry weather when the ground isn't absolute bog. The views across the water are solid enough, especially towards the south where the landscape opens out. It's good for birdwatchers who know what they're looking for - mallards, herons, the usual suspects. Families with young kids might find an hour here enough before heading elsewhere; older walkers will get proper value from a full circuit.

The lake works well as a morning stop if you're based at Lakeside View Caravan Park just five miles away - that's close enough for a casual visit without planning a full day trip. There's no charge to access it, which is worth knowing. Go early to avoid the few dog walkers who frequent the place and to catch whatever light improves the rather grey water. Don't expect facilities or anywhere to grab coffee. Bring good boots and expect mud.
