Bow Church

The City of London's most iconic church sits right in the thick of it all - surrounded by glass towers and the relentless hum of the capital. St. Mary-le-Bow, to give it its proper name, is that rare thing: a Wren church that somehow feels alive rather than museumified. Christopher Wren rebuilt it after the Great Fire of 1666, and it's been the spiritual heart of the City ever since.

What strikes you first is how the church burrows into the street level - you descend to enter, which feels oddly intimate given the modern chaos above. Inside, it's surprisingly peaceful. The coffered ceiling catches light beautifully, and if you're lucky, you'll hear the Bow Bells actually ringing. Historically, anyone born within earshot of those bells was considered a true Londoner - proper East End credentials.

It's not a lengthy visit - an hour covers it comfortably. City workers pop in mid-week for the lunchtime concerts, which are genuinely good and completely free. The crypt has a cafe and sometimes hosts events. Kids will find the bells interesting but may get restless; it's really for those who appreciate City history and decent architecture.

If you're staying at Lovat Parks nearby, Bow Church makes an excellent morning stop before heading into central London proper. It's walkable from the park, and it contextualises the City's recovery and grandeur rather nicely. No entrance fee, though donations are appreciated.
