Boundary Covert

Dense woodland tucked between Wantage and the Berkshire downs, Boundary Covert is proper walking territory rather than a tourist hotspot. The forest floor is thick with beech and oak, the kind of place where you lose phone signal and remember why you came to Berkshire in the first place.

It's a solid choice if you're after a proper woodland walk without the crowds that plague the more famous spots. The tree cover is decent year-round, so even winter visits don't feel bleak. Most people spend between an hour and ninety minutes here - long enough to shake off the week but short enough you won't spend all day tramping about.

Walkers will get the most from Boundary Covert. The paths wind through without being obvious, which means you have to actually pay attention rather than just follow arrows. Families with young children might find it a bit too easy to wander off-trail, so keep a close eye. Dogs do well here too.

If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm nearby, this is worth a morning sortie. It slots neatly into a wider exploration of the area - close enough for a quick outing but far enough to feel like you've actually gone somewhere. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring what you need.

Timing matters. Late spring and early autumn are best - the woodland is lively without being soupy underfoot. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under the canopy.
